I watched Cloverfield today. It's a good ol' monster movie done in the 'Blair Witch' style. And I quite enjoyed it. I know a lot of people have expressed their dislike for certain aspects of it, but I still enjoyed it.

I've found that my appreciation for many films stem from my willingness to go beyond the cinema experience and find out more about a movie's backstory. In the case of Cloverfield, there are many details about it (and in it) that one would miss or be confused about in a first viewing. You know, it's those moments during the movie where you go "Wait, what...? What just happened??"

After reading up about it and its plot, I can honestly say that it's a pretty good movie. Most people who dislike it complain about the camera, and also that given the nature of its plot, it leaves a number of questions unanswered. For the former, if you got sick during The Blair Witch Project due to its shaky camera and hated it because of that, then you might get sick during this one too. But if you loved TBWP and didn't mind the camera style one bit (like me), then you might like Cloverfield. As for the unanswered questions, they can be easily answered with a little reading and logic. Apparently the small easy-to-miss details leave the possibility for a sequel.

For those of you who refuse to see the movie, (or who simply know they won't be seeing it for one reason or other) but still want to know what happens, check out the surprisingly faithful abridged version. It's essentially the movie summed up in a comic (albeit in a slightly humourous take), and as such is basically a MASSIVE SPOILER. You have been warned!

Must-watch films coming up: Jumper, Get Smart, WALL-E.
Future guilty pleasure: Meet The Spartans.
Other films of interest: Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, Prince Caspian and Kung Fu Panda, to name a few.
